An adventurer’s guide to Crete in spring

The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is a popular destination for tourists and adventurers from all over the world – and it’s easy to see why. With stunning beaches and impressive gorges to explore, as well as beautiful lagoons for swimming, Crete has so much to offer.

You may assume that summer is the best time to visit the island, and you’d be right if you want to experience the highest temperatures you can. But spring is definitely worth considering too, particularly for outdoor enthusiasts – as the weather is still warm, but not too overpowering.

There’s also the natural beauty of Crete in the springtime to consider: the island blooms into life, with flowers, fragrant herbs, abundant trees, and blossoming bushes spreading across the land. Prices are also relatively low in spring compared to the summer, and there are also fewer tourists – making for a quieter and more relaxed stay.

Hike the Samaria Gorge

While this walk is rather long at roughly 16km, taking anything between five and seven hours to complete, the beautiful rock formations in the White Mountains of western Crete are well worth the trek. Nestled in the beautiful Samaria National Park, the gorge is popular among tourists despite its rough terrain. It’s also one of the longest gorges in the whole of Europe, and a must-see for adventurers while they’re in Crete!

Make a splash

Cool turquoise water and stunning white sand draw visitors to Crete’s beautiful beaches every year.

In the springtime, the water will be refreshing, revitalizing, and well worth a dip.

Visit the Cretan Olive Oil Farm

This fantastic little farm in Agios Nikolaos is well worth a visit. The town is famous for featuring in the series Cartes Postales from Greece, and it’s easy to see why this location is a quintessential taste of island life.

Their idyllic setup invites visitors to come and try their hand at a variety of traditional culinary practices in Crete.

From olive oil pressing and raki distilling to cheese making and pottery lessons, this farm is a slice of Mediterranean paradise and a perfect place to have a chilled afternoon.

Explore the birthplace of Zeus

Up high in the slopes of Mount Ida, the Dikteon Cave sits quietly as one of the most famous places in Crete. The mythological birthplace of the Greek god Zeus, it’s allegedly here that Rhea hid Zeus as a baby to protect him from being eaten by his father Cronus, as his siblings were. With lush orchards and bustling almond trees in the surrounding area, this place is steeped in beauty and history.

See the stunning Firka Fortress

Once home to the Venetian naval guard, this magnificent fortress now houses the Maritime Museum, which exhibits an extensive collection of nautical artifacts, detailing the fascinating history of the region. The surrounding Old Venetian Harbour area is perfect for whiling away an afternoon by traversing up and down the narrow streets.
