Da Nang is a destination that might not be the first to come to mind when thinking of Vietnam, yet it is an absolute gem that deserves a prime spot on your travel itinerary. While many travelers immediately think of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City when planning a trip to Vietnam – both of which I have covered in my Hanoi City guide and will soon write about in my upcoming Ho Chi Minh City travel guide – Da Nang is the beating heart of central Vietnam, boasting an incredible mix of natural beauty, cultural landmarks, and modern attractions. Having visited Da Nang multiple times, I didn’t expect to be as amazed as I was by the city’s rapid development and its unique appeal.
Now, before you ask – why isn’t Hoi An on this list? Yes, Hoi An is just a short drive away and is often bundled into Da Nang travel itineraries. But this ancient town, with its enchanting lantern-lit streets and centuries-old architecture, is so extraordinary that it deserves a dedicated article of its own. Stay tuned for my upcoming blog post covering all the wonders of Hoi An!
For now, let’s focus on Da Nang itself. Whether you’re strolling along its pristine beaches, marveling at its architectural wonders, or soaking in the city’s dynamic energy, there’s so much to discover.
In this article, I’ll introduce you to the three absolute must-visit city highlights in Da Nang – insider-recommended spots that locals say every first-time visitor should experience.

Chùa Linh Ứng and the Lady Buddha on Son Tra Peninsula
Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain, is a stunning natural reserve located northeast of Da Nang. This lush, mountainous landscape juts into the sea, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline. The area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including the rare red-shanked douc langur, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Visitors can explore winding roads that lead to scenic viewpoints and hidden places. One of the most iconic landmarks on Son Tra Peninsula is the towering Lady Buddha statue. Standing at an impressive 70 meters (about 20 stories high), it is the tallest Lady Buddha statue in Southeast Asia. Visible from My Khe Beach, the statue sits atop a lotus-shaped platform and is surrounded by intricately sculpted Buddhist figures. Inside, the statue is divided into 17 floors, each featuring 21 Buddha statues in different poses, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship. Visitors can enter the structure to admire its artistry up close and take in sweeping views of Da Nang’s coastline.

Beyond the statue, Chùa Linh Ứng Pagoda itself is an expansive temple complex adorned with lush gardens, bonsai trees, and meticulously carved white jade statues of 18 Arhat monks.
The lifelike expressions of these figures capture a range of emotions, from joy to contemplation, adding a unique charm to the temple grounds. I found these statues whimsical and full of character – far from intimidating, they each tell a story that invites visitors to pause and appreciate their artistic detail.
For an unforgettable experience, take a Grab car to the temple and spend half a day exploring its tranquil grounds. From the temple entrance, you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of Da Nang’s coastline, stretching from My Khe Beach to the city skyline. And if you want to unwind with a drink while soaking in the scenery, I have a little secret – head to the Sơn Trà Marina Café. Styled with a Greek-inspired design of white walls and blue windows, this charming café offers a picturesque setting to sip coffee and enjoy delicious cakes while gazing at the ocean. The window-framed views make for an Instagram-worthy moment you won’t want to miss.
Ngũ Hành Sơn / The Marble Mountains
The Marble Mountains, or Ngũ Hành Sơn, are one of the most intriguing natural and cultural landmarks in Da Nang. This cluster of five limestone and marble hills rises dramatically from the otherwise flat landscape, creating a striking contrast that is hard to miss.
Located between Da Nang and Hoi An, the mountains are easily spotted from the road as you travel between the two cities. Their unique formations, spiritual significance, and breathtaking views make them a must-visit.
The name “Ngũ Hành Sơn” translates to “Five Elements Mountains,” with each peak named after one of the five elements: Thuy (Water), Moc (Wood), Hoa (Fire), Kim (Metal), and Tho (Earth). These mountains have been a pilgrimage site for centuries, featuring hidden caves, pagodas, and intricate stone carvings.

Visitors can explore the mountains by taking a hike up the stone staircases leading to the peaks, or, for those who prefer a more accessible option, an elevator is available to ascend to the top. However, I highly recommend taking the stairs at a leisurely pace, as the journey itself is filled with fascinating sights, including the second of Da Nang’s three Linh Ứng Pagodas.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Marble Mountains is their extensive cave system. Hoa Nghiem Cave is home to a 400-year-old stone statue of Lady Buddha, a revered spiritual figure in Vietnam. Tang Chon Cave and Huyen Khong Cave are also highlights, each offering stunning natural rock formations, ancient Buddhist shrines, and a serene, almost mystical ambiance.
As you navigate through the Marble Mountains, be mindful of the slippery paths and steep climbs – your adventure awaits. While exploring on your own is certainly manageable, consider joining a guided tour that includes a visit to Hoi An. Not only will you gain fascinating insights from an informative guide, but you might also uncover new stories and secrets about the Marble Mountains that you wouldn’t have discovered on your own.
Ba Na Hills – The Ultimate Man-Made Wonderland
Ba Na Hills is a world-class hill resort and theme park, created by Sun World, offering a mix of thrilling attractions, cultural experiences, and breathtaking architecture.
Nestled in the Truong Son Mountains, Ba Na Hills sits at an elevation of 1,487 meters, making it a refreshing escape from the coastal heat of Da Nang. With its European-inspired villages, exhilarating rides, and stunning viewpoints, Ba Na Hills is a must-visit for any traveler.

One of the highlights of Ba Na Hills is the Ba Na Cable Car, which opened on March 29, 2013. Holding the world record for the longest non-stop single-track cable car at 5,801 meters (19,032 feet), this cable car system offers a breathtaking ride over lush forests and misty mountains. There are four different cable car routes, providing multiple ways to ascend the hill. Due to the elevation, the weather at the top is often cooler and mistier than in the city, making it a great retreat during the hot summer months.

Love all your suggestions, Da Nang is an incredible place with so much to offer. Can I add one more? The Dragon Bridge in Da Nang – going up on the bridge, and gathering with the locals on the night that it breaths fire, and spurts water is a cultural experience I’ll never forget. That bridge is amazing. And the local families were so welcoming to have us join. I’d return to Da Nang just to see that again.
