Where to find the most scenic views in Sri Lanka

From its luscious interior teeming with wildlife, rainforests, and mountainscapes to its edges perfectly adorned with endless stretches of glistening azure oceans and golden sands, Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world to visit. But with so many stunning destinations to choose from, where should you head for the most scenic views?

We’ve gathered three of the most beautiful spots to feast your eyes on in Sri Lanka.

Galle

Galle is an enchanting coastal town on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. With a rich history, this sleepy corner offers idyllic beaches, swaying palms, and a melting pot of cultures. Owned by the Dutch, Portuguese, and British before gaining independence, Galle is teeming with ancient relics that nod to its many stories. The Fort is unsurprisingly a UNESCO World Heritage site, with stunning 16th-century European-style architecture fused with Dutch churches and monuments to be found throughout.

Both locals and tourists alike will be gathered atop the Fort’s seaside wall to watch the magic of the Sri Lankan sunset. As the sky explodes into vibrant shades of orange, pink and red, you can sip on a cold beer and connect with the locals as you watch the sun disappear into the ocean.

Ella

Nestled deep in the Sri Lankan highlands, Ella is a charming region with dramatic scenery and panoramic views of the surrounding tea plantations. After exploring the quaint village, hike up into the mountains for some of the most scenic views Sri Lanka has to offer. Be sure to wear proper hiking boots and avoid sandals, as the area is highly populated with leeches! They won’t hurt you, but you can squeeze a little lime or lemon juice onto them to stop them from drinking your blood if any befriending you.

As you head up into the misty mountains, you’ll find the iconic ‘Ella Gap’ – a viewpoint that draws travelers worldwide to gaze down over the lush, rolling countryside between two soaring peaks. Other areas to visit in Ella include Adam’s Peak and the more easy-to-climb Little Adam’s Peak, two famous mountains which again offer stunning views over the Sri Lankan Hill Country. Be sure to try and find some of Ella’s hidden waterfalls as you traverse through the undulating scenery – and bring a towel as you’ll definitely want to take a dip if you do.

Bentota

Bentota has been coined as Sri Lanka’s most romantic resort. This secluded strip of beachland features a turquoise lagoon sheltered by an aptly named beach, Cape Paradise, on one side and a longer stretch of golden sand fronting the ocean on the other. The natural beauty of Bentota has made it a popular destination for honeymooners, and as a result, a number of luxurious amenities have popped up in the area.

You can try your hand at several watersports at the Kofifi Marina, or take a boat ride down the Bentota River and discover mangroves inhabited by monkeys and crocodiles. There’s also a turtle sanctuary and a spa. If a tropical beach view is on your bucket list, you’ll struggle to find a more perfect place than Bentota in Sri Lanka. And with a plethora of visually incredible things to see and do, you won’t be forgetting your time here in a hurry.
