Scenic Road Trips Through the British Countryside

We’ve got so many incredibly wonderful and stunning regions in Europe – and one of them is most definitely the United Kingdom. They’ve got it all: picturesque landscapes, charming villages, storied history, and a beautifully rough coastline. There is definitely no shortage of breathtaking scenery there to discover along their narrow winding roads, no matter if you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural exploration. But what route’s the one to take?

The North Coast 500: The Scottish Adventure

The name says it all. Stretching over 500 miles, you’ll drive through the rugged Highlands of Scotland on a journey that is stunning enough to be on the radars of people looking for the most scenic driving routes of the world. Plastered with dramatic cliffs, twists, and turns, there is a new vista behind every corner – including historic castles, Highland villages, the wild Northern Sea, and, if you are really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of Loch Ness.

The Lake District: A Haven for Nature Enthusiasts

In a recent survey conducted by fitted wardrobe manufacturer Hammonds, the UK itself conducted the most picturesque places to live in the kingdom, and even the locals voted this place onto the podium. With 14% of the votes, Cumbria’s Lake District is certified breathtaking. You can find it in the northwest of England, alongside shimmering lakes, verdant valleys, and towering fells. Especially iconic landmarks such as Lake Windermere, Derwentwater, and Scafell Pike (England’s highest peak) should be on your list of stops.

The Cotswolds: Rolling Hills and Honey-Coloured Villages

Another top 10 location for Brits, with 7% of the votes, are the Cotswolds, nestled in the heart of England – and absolutely quintessential when you think of English countryside charm. There are lovely winding country lanes out here lined with hedgerows and dry-stone walls. Make sure to have a look at villages like Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Castle Combe with its thatched cottages and medieval churches that dot the landscape. If you want to fully immerse yourself in the vision of a romantic British countryside, this is it.

The Causeway Coastal Route: Ireland’s Gem

Last on our list we got the Emerald Isle, the Causeway Coastal Route that offers a wonderfully scenic journey along Northern Ireland’s rugged coastline, with a myriad of breathtaking sea views, ancient ruins, and geological wonders.

Highlights include the UNESCO-listed Giant’s Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and definitely the idyllic villages of Cushendall and Ballycastle!

That’s of course, only barely a handful of what there is on offer in the UK, but it’s definitely one with impact. If you’re going to conquer one of them, make sure you always plan your routes in advance, but leave room for spontaneity and detours to explore some more of our hidden gems on the way. We love coupling it with picnics, too, for a cheeky al fresco dining at rest stops. Remember, as always, to stay respectful toward the environment and local communities!
